Kiev is so interesting that more and more visitors consider it as one of their destinations of choice in Europe. Here are some of the interesting information about the Ukraninan capital:

The city was founded by the legendary Eastern Slavic chief Kiy and his brothers and sister at the end of the 5th century AD.

The population of the city is about 3 million residents; the population count does not include immediate the suburbs.

“Kiev” is a Russian term and the official name of the city in the Ukrainian language is “Kyiv”.

Kiev used to be a strong hillside fortress that oversaw and guarded the major East European trade route, River Dnieper. It protected the people of Eastern European farmlands against the savage nomadic tribes from the steppes in Southern Ukraine.

From the late 9th century to 1240, Kiev was the capital of the first Russian state, the Kievan Rus.

Ukraine’s capital was the largest town in the 11th century Europe. It was 50 times the size of London and 10 times the size of Paris. Its popularity reached its peak from 1010 to 1054 under the rule of Yaroslav the Wise, who had connections to the royal houses of Poland, Hungary, Norway, and France.

In 1240 Kiev was defeated by the Mongolian armies. It was thoroughly burned, ruined, and reduced to several huts. The people, including all the traders, crafters, and artists became slaves.

From the 1350s to 1360s, the city fell under the Rzech Pospolita (a union of Lithuania and Poland) rule.

The United Nations named Kiev as the world’s greenest city. There are around 20 square meters of greens per resident.

Kiev is Ukraine’s first and only capital since December 1, 1991 when the country achieved its independence.

Chestnut is Kiev’s unofficial logo and May is the most breathtaking month in the city when chestnuts bloom.
