Kiev is the bustling capital city of Ukraine. Situated on the Dnipro River, this scenic place is one of the oldest (around 1550 years old) and most important cities in the region. It is the heart of Rus civilization, and survivor of many wars, genocides, and purges. Many architectural and historical landmarks are reconstructed or preserved here.

The architecture and art of Kiev are world gems. St. Sophia Cathedral, for example, has outstanding frescoes and mosaics dating back to the 11th century. Overlooking Podol (the city’s old section) is the Ukrainian Baroque Andriivska Church, much beloved by every Ukrainian.

Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (the Monastery of the Caves) is a short trolley ride from the city center. On its grounds are two cathedrals built in the 11th-century. It is also home to world-famous bell tower, catacombs, and museum collections. Near the city center is the Golden Gate, a structure dating back to 1037. Its remains stand in a charming public park at the corner of Velyka Pidvalna and Volodymyrska Streets. You will see the splendid 19th-century Cathedral of St. Volodymyr several blocks away.

The modern center, which still houses some parts of the Old Kiev, is on the hilly west, on the Dnipro River’s right bank. Khreshchatik, the major street, is located between two steep hills. The main street of the old city is 500 meters west of parallel to Khreshchatik.
